A COLORED LEAGUE RARITY (SPORT--BASEBALL.) A previously unknown group photograph of the legendary Colored League Champions, the Washington Potomacs. 11 x 19 inch panoramic silver print photograph by Addison Scurlock; some vertical cracks every 3-4 inches from being rolled, but not as terrible as it sounds. District of Columbia, circa 1923

  • Notes: a previously unrecorded photograph of this famous team, taken May 10, 1923 at their inaugural game against the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants with good crisp detail. This photo provides the sharpest known images of many of these players and is the only known photograph of Alex Albritton, Morris Williams, and Buck Ridgeley. Standing to the left is E. J. Butler, their business manager. The rest of the players are Mark Eggleston, William Ross, Joe Lewis, Bullet Campbell, Wayne Carr, Will Owens, and Ben Taylor. Kneeling are Ralph Jefferson, William Woods, Pete Washington, Joe Goodrich (the only known photo of Goodrich in uniform) Morten Clark, and Elias Brown. The Potomacs were an independent club, owned and managed by Hall of Famer, Ben Taylor. The photo was taken in Griffith Stadium (then known as American League Park) in Washington, DC on opening day, May 10, 1923, just before a game between the Potomacs and the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants was about to be played. A street parade was held before the game, after which an enormous four foot tall horse-shoe shaped bouquet of over one hundred roses was presented to Taylor. a truly historic baseball photograph.
