(SPORTING.) Alken, Henry. The First Steeple-Chace on Record.

AN ALKEN CLASSIC (SPORTING.) Alken, Henry. The First Steeple-Chace on Record. Complete suite of 4 hand-colored aquatints, each approximately 405x475 mm sheet size; minor removable toning; uniformly matted and framed. London, 1839

  • Notes: Dudley Snelgrove in his catalogue of the Mellon Collection of
British Sporting prints describes this suite as "the most popular set devised by Alken . . . The plates, aquatinted by John Harris, are of the highest quality." He further notes that the third print in the series was issued in various states. The plate in this suite appears in the first state.
Consignor states that the suite originally belonged to the
Duke and Duchess of Connaught. The set was given as a gift to J. Browne, Vice President and head of the Ottawa branch of the Bank of Montreal. The bank handled the royals financial affairs while the Duke served as the Governor General of the Dominion of Canada. The suite was purchsed from the estate of the banker by the consignor in 1944.
