(SPORTS--BASEBALL.) Photographs of the demolition of Ebbets Field.

(SPORTS--BASEBALL.) Photographs of the demolition of Ebbets Field. 8 photographs, each about 11 x 8 inches or smaller, one with photographer's inked stamp on verso; minimal wear. [Brooklyn, NY, early 1960]

  • Notes: The Brooklyn Dodgers fled for Los Angeles after the 1957 season, abandoning their much-beloved ballpark, Ebbets Field. After two years of hosting the occasional high school game or soccer match, demolition began in February 1960. These artistic images show demolition workers among the evocative ruins of the old ballfield. Two show a hard-hatted worker standing in front of the weathered scoreboard and the iconic Abe Stark sign ("hit sign, win suit"). One shows stacks of dislodged stadium seats, and an exterior shot advertises "Next Game Dodgers vs."--nobody, over a "Demolition by Harry Avirom" sign. Provenance: acquired from the estate of magazine photographer Irving Dolin of New York.
