(SPORTS--CRICKET.) [Pycroft, James.] The Cricket Field: or, The History and the Science of Cricket. Frontispiece plate, text illustrations. 238 pages plus [7] leaves of publisher''s ads. 12mo, publisher''s gilt pictorial 1/4 calf, moderate wear, backstrip ends worn; minimal wear to contents. Boston: Mayhew & Baker, 1859

  • Notes: first american edition, with a new preface, of an important British cricket guide (see previous lot). Also of interest are 5 pages of publisher''s ads relating to their Base Ball Player''s Pocket Companion, which included rules of both the New York and the doomed Massachusetts variants. Four full-page engravings from this baseball manual are included here, titled "The Thrower," "The Striker," "The Catcher," and "Base Tender" (standing by the stake used in Massachusetts rather than a flat base). Early owner Franklin Satterthwaite (1845-1888) was a well-known sports journalist and great-great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin.
