ST. CLAIR, ARTHUR. Letter Signed, "Ar.St.Clair," as Major General and aide-de-camp to Washington,

MOVING PRISONERS, TWO DAYS AFTER THE SURRENDER AT YORKTOWN ST. CLAIR, ARTHUR. Letter Signed, "Ar.St.Clair," as Major General and aide-de-camp to Washington, to Brigadier General George Weedon, arranging the disposition of the captive army's property two days after the British surrender at Yorktown. 1 page, folio, with integral address leaf; short closed separations along 2 folds, moderate wear to address leaf with small seal hole. Head Quarters [near Yorktown, VA], 21 October 1781

  • Notes: "The horse of Tarleton's corps you mention must for the present be delivered to the Quartermaster General. . . . The boat, having been taken by the troops does not come within the purview of the capitulation and consequently does not belong to the French. . . . The colours must be sent here. I hope the prisoners are marched as the General is anxious upon that head." Washington was eager to get the British prisoners inland, being concerned that a British fleet might still manage to break through and free them.
