STEICHEN, EDWARD (1879-1973)

Greta Garbo. Oversized and toned silver print, 16 1/2x13 1/4 inches (41.9x33.7 cm.), with Steichen's signature on mount recto. 1928; probably printed in 1960

  • Notes: In 1960 Steichen, then director of the department of photographs at the Museum of Modern Art, began preparations for his retrospective entitled "Steichen the Photographer." Given the scarcity of vintage prints, he revisited older negatives and worked with master printer Rolf Petersen, his assistant on the "Family of Man" exhibition, to make the newer exhibition prints. The two collaborated on this body of photographs so closely that Steichen invited Petersen and his wife to live in a cottage on his farm in Connecticut.

Steichen worked tirelessly with Petersen, and prints were toned personally by Steichen. A copy of this image, unsigned, was one of 3 images of Garbo included in the exhibition. This oversized print is signed by Steichen at the lower right, in his characteristic block-letter style.
