STEIG, WILLIAM (1907-2003) "The Time Reader as seen by Wm. Steig." Pen and ink wash on paper; 28 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches. Possibly a design for a Young & Rubican advertising campaign to increase Time Magazine's readership, 1950s Matted and framed. Besides drawing his famous New Yorker cartoons and writing and illustrating award-winning children's books, William Steig did a lot of advertising that he hated. He is perhaps best remembered today for having created the character Shrek. Here he depicts the typical reader of Time in post-war America as a college man, traveller, community man, good provider and decision maker—just another man in a grey flannel suit. Nd, 1950s
