STEINBECK, JOHN. The Pastures of Heaven.

STEINBECK, JOHN. The Pastures of Heaven. 8vo, publisher''s gilt-lettered green cloth, light fade to spine tips; dust jacket, minor rubbing, few small chips to extremities, folds creased; endpapers toned with a few residual stains; Autograph Letter (folded) tipped to front pastedown. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932

  • Notes: first edition, first issue in the first issue dust jacket, presentation copy, warmly inscribed on front pastedown: "For Louis Paul: that I wish I could write as good as him, John Steinbeck, Los Gatos, 1936. I wonder what will become of us now! And I could wish that this book might possibly give you as much pleasure as your wanting me to sign it gives me. J.S."

Writer and Steinbeck correspondent Louis Paul (born Leroi Placet) authored thirteen novels as well as works for television and the Broadway stage. After reading and admiring Paul''s contribution to the O. Henry Prize Stories of 1934, the two struck up a friendship with Steinbeck acting as a mentor of sorts. In a November 24, 1937 letter to his literary agents Elizabeth Otis, Anne Laurie Williams and Mavis McIntosh, Steinbeck gives an enthusiastic endorsement: "I''m bringing you a new client. Louis Paul. He''s a swell egg and you will like him. And he''s well enough known so that it may not be hard to sell his stories. I like him immensely" (Steinbeck, A Life in Letters, p. 144, 1975).

In the unsigned Autograph Letter to Paul ("Dear Louis") Steinbeck mentions the rarity of the present edition ("This super first edition I''m told is hard to get") and ironically alludes to a recent rejection by theatrical producer Herman Shumlin (likely the proposed stage version of In Dubious Battle) with the observation that "I grow more and more convinced that any book which gets by easily is a lousy book."

Of the 2500 copies printed, 1650 were bound, but only 650 copies were sold. The balance were sold by Brewer, Warren & Putnam to Robert 0. Ballou for re-issue. Both ABPC and Rare Book Hub trace only one other signed copy of the first issue of the first edition in the first issue jacket. excellent literary association copy.
