STEINBECK, JOHN. Typed Letter Signed, "John," to his literary agent Elizabeth Otis,

SELLING HIS OLD BOAT, INSURING HIS NEW BOAT NAMED AFTER HIS WIFE STEINBECK, JOHN. Typed Letter Signed, "John," to his literary agent Elizabeth Otis, expecting to call Monday morning, describing the plan for a multi-day trip to visit his ex-wife Gwyn as well as two schools in order to help him decide where to send his sons (Eaglebrook School in Deerfield and Forman School in Litchfield), anticipating testing out his new boat ( Fayre Eleyne, named after his wife Elaine Scott), reporting that he has sold his old boat ( Lillymaid), describing the payment arrangements, explaining that he has lost the name of the old boat's insurer, planning to insure the new boat, and explaining that the present letter was given to Shirley [Fisher, literary agent] because of unreliable mail. 1 page, 4to, onionskin paper; horizontal fold, faint marginal discoloration from prior matting. Sag Harbor, NY, "Friday" 1950s

". . . I have been in touch with Marguerite Tuttle and she has worked out a couple of schools for me to visit . . . . One is the Eaglebrook School in Deerfield Mass and the other the Forman School, in Litchfield, Conn. I will have to get to these things if I hope to get the boys in. So we will plan to drive in on Tuesday early . . . .
"Friday I should be back to test my new boat and Saturday, unless there is a bad storm, I shall bring her out here. It makes something of a busy week, doesn't it? . . . I have the acceptance of the Boys in the camp near here as of today. If I could just get the schools worked out I would be very glad.
"I've sold the Lillymaid to Bob Barry of Sag Harbor. He and his brothers own the largest business in town. He wants to pay not later than July 1st and he is certainly good for it. He will pay fifteen hundred dollars for the boat . . . . He just cracked up his airplane and asked for that time to pay for the boat. . . ."
