Inscribed in the image at lower right and on the mount below the image. 5½x4 inches (image), 6½x4¼ inches overall; poor contrast to portions of inscription, loss to upper right corner of mount and photograph, faint scattered staining, minor scattered abrasions, photographer's imprint at lower edge of mount and on verso.

    Samuel Selwyn Chamberlain (1851-1916) was an American journalist and editor of newspapers including the New York Herald, San Francisco Examiner, and Boston American. At the time Crane signed this photograph, Chamberlain was managing editor of The New York Journal; it was he who sent Crane to Greece to cover the Greco-Turkish War.
