STC 11589; ESTC S102856; rare at auction: 2 copies have been offered at auction since 2000, including the present example; previously, a few copies came up in the 1970s and 1980s.

Gardiner who was a Catholic bishop during the religious tumult of mid-16th century Britain. Intimately associated with Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas More, he played an important role in Henry VIII's application to the Pope to divorce Catherine of Aragon. In this work, Gardiner argues against George Joye (1495-1553), a protestant Bible translator who believed that clergy members should be allowed to marry. Here, the topic is the martyrdom of Robert Barnes (1495-1540), who was persecuted by Wolsey and imprisoned for his reformist sermons. Gardiner targeted Barnes repeatedly from the pulpit at St. Paul's Cross, which ultimately resulted in Barnes being burned at the stake.
