Stephen King (b. 1947)

Pet Sematary. First Edition.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1983.
First edition, octavo; bound in publisher's gilt-stamped black cloth, bright red endpapers; with the first issue pictorial dust jacket dating Tabitha King's Caretakers as 1982 on the rear panel, price intact (three small tears to top edge of jacket, light wear, creases, and spotting; short tear to front flyleaf, boards a touch bowed, a few tiny white stains to front, spotting at block edges); 9 ¼ x 6 in.

In 1979, Stephen King and his family moved to Orrignton, Maine where they lived near a road frequently littered with roadkill, behind which neighborhood children had created a "pet sematary." When his young son was almost struck and his daughter's cat killed by a passing truck, King was moved by fears for his family to write Pet Sematary. The work is also loosely based on W.W. Jacob's short story, "The Monkey's Paw," in which a couple's wish to resurrect their son leads to dire consequences.
