STILL, WILLIAM

Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4to; on William Still's "Good Agents Wanted" letterhead. Philadelphia, 28 May 1873 "Dear Edward: W.H. Jones of Monongahela City writes me for an agency. He states "I have sample copy prospectus." I can't tell who he is and until I hear from you I shall hold his application under advisement. Write soon, Yours truly W. Still. Willie (his second child) seems a little better but has got the whooping cough in earnest. The rest are all well, W.S. "William Still (1821-1902) was known as the chief conductor on the underground railroad and author of its definitive history. After the Civil War and emancipation, he became a successful Philadelphia businessman but remained deeply involved with the state of African-Americans until his death. This letter on his "underground railroad" stationary is apparently in regard to a position as agent for promoting Still's book, which was published the previous year.
