  • Notes:
This is the first of four lithographs of the Brooklyn Bridge that Wengenroth (1906-1978) made from 1948 to 1960.

Stow Wengenroth was an American printmaker best known for his stunningly rendered depictions of urban and coastal subjects across New England. Trained at the Art Students League in New York under instructors including George Bridgman and Boardman Robinson, Wengenroth developed a practice grounded in direct observation and technical precision. He went on to be a long-time instructor at the Art Students League himself and a prolific contributor to American print culture at large. His work is held in major institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The Brooklyn Bridge was among Wengenroth's most iconic and carefully studied subjects. In his compositions, Wengenroth highlighted the structural and functional facets of its form, often showing a view of the Brooklyn waterfront or along the East River to emphasize its scale, geometrical features, and integration in the surrounding urban landscape. In his lithographs, Wengenroth underscored the bridge's strikingly engineered components while pointedly situating it within the shifting atmospheric conditions surrounding it. These works exemplify his broader interest in American infrastructure as a lived environment, reflecting both the grandeur of the structure and its role in the rhythms of New York City life.
