  • Notes: A few elements in the painting suggest that it was used promotionally for a theater production of Uncle Tom's Cabin. There are two snarling mastiffs being held at bay by an assistant overseer. There are no dogs in the novel, but various stage productions used dogs on stage to add an element of fear and drama. Another creative touch is palm trees lining the shore of a river. Theatrical companies often used painted panels to advertise their productions, much as "lobby cards" are used in film theaters today.
