STRAND, PAUL. Autograph Letter Signed, to Vito and Pauline Cioffero, congratulating them on the birth of a child, discussing the size of a print and comparing it to a Rembrandt etching he owns, detailing the type of varnish he prefers to use and how it is applied, and giving his opinion on the Photo League. 4 pages, two 4to sheets, blue paper; usual folds. With the original mailing envelope Signed. Orgeval, 13 October 1962

  • Notes: "... As I see it, for one thing, the print is too small. Size plays a very important role in all art. We have a Rembrandt etching, 8 cm x 9 cm, portrait of a man. It doesn't need to be larger; it is completely satisfying, but this and some 15th century woodcuts are great exceptions... Please tell everybody who may be using it that the tetrachloride should have just a very pale yellow twist... after applying the varnish, then get as much of it off the print as possible, all that can be removed by rubbing with clean cotton. There should not be a single visible streak, in fact the print should feel thoroughly dry..."
