STRAUSS, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to an "Esteemed Colleague" [Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Hans Richter?], in Germa

28-YEAR OLD COMPOSER TO CONDUCT HIS TONE POEM "DON JUAN" STRAUSS, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to an "Esteemed Colleague" [Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Hans Richter?], in German, requesting the rehearsal schedule for the Vienna festival [Viennese Musical and Theatrical Exhibition of 1892], and inquiring when he would be expected and whether he is to conduct works other than "Don Juan." 2 pages, 8vo, with integral blank; horizontal fold. Marquartstein, 1 September 1892

  • Notes: "Mr. von Bronsart referred me to you to inquire concerning the rehearsal schedule for the Music Festival and when I must arrive in Vienna. . . .
". . . I do not know whether the Royal Orchestra or the Exposition Orchestra will perform at the Musicians Meeting. If the Royal Orchestra (I believe the Philharmonic has already played Don Juan), then I beg you to reserve one rehearsal and one additional dress rehearsal. If the Exposition Orchestra, I need at least 3 generous rehearsals, since you know how difficult the work is.
"I would also beg you to inform me who will conduct what and if I should perform something besides Don Juan.
"I sit here like a poor, sick dog, totally isolated from the outside world, which only sends me sparse news. . . .
"I will see you in Vienna."
The Viennese Musical and Theatrical Exhibition of 1892, held in Vienna's Prater park between May and October, included performances in a music hall built for the exhibition, the opening concert of which was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Hans Richter.
