STRAUSS, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to General Director of the Vienna State Opera Franz Schneiderhan, in German,

WONDERS HOW WAGNER WOULD PRODUCE HIS RING IN 1931 STRAUSS, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to General Director of the Vienna State Opera Franz Schneiderhan, in German, requesting information about an award he recently received, expressing his hope that the National Assembly would pass a new budget so that the State Theater would not need to appeal to the city for funding, expressing optimisim about the continued health of the Theater, reporting that he has asked an authority how Wagner would produce his Ring if he could see today's world, sending thanks for the award, sending regards to and asking about his family, and, in a postscript, reporting that he will go to Baden for treatment and wondering whether he will see his wife during the summer. 4 pages, 12mo, written on a single folded sheet, personal stationery; minor even toning to terminal page. With the original envelope. Garmisch, 16 [June 19]31

  • Notes: ". . . I still have not received an award certificate, so I had to learn from the newspapers about what sort of distinction I should be grateful for . . . .
"I read recently that Herbeck left in 1873 because they did not approve the necessary funds . . . . It is always the same thing. Yet Mozart and Beethoven live on.
". . . As far as the famous Wagner tradition is concerned, I have already written to the apostle Karpath to ask him whether he knew how Richard Wagner, seeing things with 1931 eyes, would produce his Ring. I, at any rate, do not know. Criticizing is easy, but making something better is not. . . ."
