STUART DAVIS Theatre on the Beach.

STUART DAVIS
Theatre on the Beach.

Lithograph, 1931. 279x381 mm; 11x15 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 19/25 in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this extremely scarce lithograph.

The setting behind the figure is the Place Dancourt and the façade of the Théâtre de Montmartre, Paris, which was memorialized in a 1925 Eugène Atget photograph. Davis made several preparatory sketches of the building, based on Atget's photograph, for Theatre on the Beach.

We have found only 10 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Cole/Myers 16.
