"IT WILL BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END" (SUFFRAGETTES.) STONE, LUCY. Autograph Letter Signed, to Francis Amasa Walker ("Gen. F.A. Walker, My long ago pupil and Friend"), inviting him to the next meeting of the American Women Suffrage Association in Washington, listing some notable present and past members including W[illiam] L[loyd] Garrison, L[ydia] Maria Child, and T[homas] W[entworth] Higginson, comparing the cause of women's suffrage to that of anti-slavery, listing some planned speakers including Mrs. [Julia Ward] Howe and Mr. [Henry Browne] Blackwell, and imploring him to attend and give an avowal of support. 2 pages, 8vo, "The Woman's Journal" stationery, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; remnants of prior mounting at four points along right edge, horizontal folds. Boston, 13 Nov[ember] 1880

  • Notes: ". . . I wish very much to have you come and help us. I am sure you believe in the principle, and the time has fully come when a more cordial word from you will be of infinite advantage to us, and to you[;] sooner or later, it will be, what it now is to those who in the same way gave support to the anti-slavery cause. . . .
". . . It will be the beginning of the end when some one outside of our regular ranks, some one with influence which comes from personal wealth, shall take our pact.
"Mrs. Lieberman, Mrs. Howe, Col. T.W. Higginson, Miss Eastman, Mr. Blackwell and others will be there as speakers, so no burden of the meeting need concern you; but a royal avowal is what I want. . . ."
