Boston: Jewett, 1856 Speech of Charles Sumner, in the Senate of the United States, 19th and 20th May 1856 and one of several nearly simultaneous editions. One of the best known and most consequential speeches of the 1850s, this carefully worded and vitriolic attack against slavery was, in part, aimed at Senator Butler of South Carolina causing Butler's nephew to attack and nearly kill Sumner on the floor of the Senate.
