  • Notes: First Trade Edition after 17 specially printed and numbered copies. apollinaire first coined the term surrealism in this work and concurrently applied it to Satie and Picasso's ballet Parade as well. However, at that time the word was used to define a state of heightened reality and was relegated to literature only. It eventually expanded in definition to indicate nonrational, subconscious ideas and was applied to visual media, primarily by Andre Breton, who laid out its implications in his Surrealist Manifesto of 1924.
