On May 14, 1935, the Little Belt Bridge connecting the Danish islands of Jutland and Funen officially opened. The engineering marvel was a major affair for the small Scandinavian nation and a necessity for a country that is basically an archipelago. It was such a source of national pride that the opening of the bridge was attended by King Christian himself. The truss bridge was famously depicted in Aage Rasmussen's 1951 poster for the Danish State Railway (DSB). Here, Henriksen focuses on the immense arched approaches to the bridge, before it actually extends out over the water. Depicted crossing the impressive structure is a Lyntog, "lightning train." These diesel powered express trains were introduced at the same time the bridge was built. They pulled three or four coaches and were painted red with a white strip below their window. "Sven Henriksen is a relatively unknown but utterly brilliant poster artist who had a simple and very effective, German-inspired style. He was the only one of the cartoonists in the Danish poster art's golden age, exclusively specialized in poster production, and he was an experienced manufacturer of very beautiful and eye-catching posters" (danskplakatkunst.dk). This is the English version.
