First edition, first issue, octavo, with "mountain" spelled correctly on page 41, "water" without the 'a' on page 22, and the 5 mm limitation statement; no. 373 of 1,000 copies printed; bound in flexible black boards, gilt-lettered, edges uncut (lacking rare salmon dust jacket, rather worn); 7 5/8 x 5 in.

American Poet Laureate and essayist Allen Tate was a long-time admirer of T.S. Eliot when they first met in 1928. Their subsequent friendship lasted more than thirty years. After Eliot's death, Tate paid him final homage in his collection of essays, T.S. Eliot: The Man and his Work (1966).
