TAFT, WILLIAM HOWARD. Autograph Letter Signed, "WmHTaft," to Henry P. Robbins, in pencil,

TAFT, WILLIAM HOWARD. Autograph Letter Signed, "WmHTaft," to Henry P. Robbins, in pencil, thanking for his flattering article in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, comparing his situation to that of characters in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's play Richelieu (1839), and apologizing for the "ragged" speech he delivered. 3 pages, 8vo, personal stationery, written on a folded sheet; moderate smearing to first two pages (but still legible), folds. (SFC) New Haven, 17 August 1915

". . . I write to express my appreciation of the words of your editorial in the Globe Democrat. You remember Richelieu in the play, in praising De Mauprat to Julie de Mortimer said that he like him because when the Cardinal's play was given before the Court of Louis the XIII, he had applauded 'in the right places.' . . . [W]hen . . . one hears emphasis where he would like to have it put, it is sweetly gratifying and flattering and strongly commends the judgment of the Daniel who speaks. I have sent the editorial to my wife . . . . You will make her woman's heart rejoice. Of course she is an impartial judge and severe critic.
"My welcome at St. Louis was most gratifying. I am very sorry I made such a ragged speech. What great speeches one makes in his mind after the event by filling in what he forgot? . . ."
