Tahiti Watercolor.

13 1/2x20 inches on paper. Signed "Hirschfeld - Tahiti / 32" top right.
A charming watercolor executed during his two-month stay in Tahiti.
Hirschfeld and his new wife went to the South Seas in 1931, where his approach to art changed forever. Before moving on to Bali, they spent about 2 months in Tahiti, which he described thus, "The colorful natives of Tahiti...seemed imported from Central Casting in Hollywood."
But in Bali, "I knew that my life would never again be the same. The Balinese sun seemed to bleach out all color, leaving everything in pure line. The people became line drawings walking around... it was in Bali that my attraction to drawing blossomed into an enduring affair with line."
one of the few early watercolors remaining in private hands.
