CLARIFYING LOUISIANA PURCHASE TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD, CHARLES MAURICE DE. Letter Signed, "ch mau talleyrand," as Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Minister Plenipotentiary to France Robert R. Livingston, in French, acknowledging receipt of his letter, stating that Livingston's remarks have been conveyed to the Minister of Finance [François de Barbé-Marbois], and assuring him that discussion concerning the provisions would be conducted in good faith. 1 page, folio, with integral blank; folds; 1/4 morocco clamshell case. Paris, 7 March 1804

  • Notes: "I received the letter you did me the honor to write to me on 24 February concerning various provisions of the Convention of 30 April [the Louisiana Purchase Treaty] for which you seem to require explanation. . . .
"I have no doubt that the discussion that they will engender will be in perfect harmony with the principles of good faith and friendship that unite the two governments, and which France will eagerly seize the occasion to demonstrate to the United States."
Although the Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed in 1803, territorial disputes and other difficulties that arose in the interpretation of the Treaty's conventions continued for years.
