  • Notes: first collected edition. "John Taylor the ''Water Poet,'' a Thames waterman, was prompted by a facility for extemporaneous verse to venture into print in 1612. His ensuing career as a published poet spanned four decades and encompassed the genres of travel literature, parody, history, and satire . . . Taylor''s poetry was directed to a broad cross section of the reading public, particularly reflecting topics of interest and concern to the London middle class. By eschewing conventional modes and topics, he distanced himself from poets of his time and drew from the native English satiric tradition" (ODNB). Alden 630/178 (for poems on American subjects); Pforzheimer 1006; STC 23725.
