TAYLOR, ZACHARY. Autograph Letter Signed, "Z. Taylor," as Major General, to General John E. Wool,

NEWS OF BATTLE OF CERRO GORDO AND CORRECTING STATEMENTS ABOUT BUENA VISTA TAYLOR, ZACHARY. Autograph Letter Signed, "Z. Taylor," as Major General, to General John E. Wool, conveying that a battle at Cerro Gordo on the 17th [the Battle of Cerro Gordo, April 18th] had been published in a Mexican newspaper, hoping that the routing of Santa Anna would bring about an early peace, hoping to receive sufficient troops to maintain his position, telling him to expect a fuller report on troop movements from Major Bliss, and describing his efforts to correct false statements attributed to Taylor printed in a newspaper concerning the Battle of Buena Vista. 2 1/2 pages, 4to, written on a folded sheet; docketing on terminal page, horizontal folds. "Camp near Monterey Mexico," 10 May 1847

  • Notes: ". . . A citizen residing in Monterey rec'd on Saturday last the 8th an extra published in the city of Mexico giving an acct of a battle having been fought at Cerro Gordo on the 17th, ulto, between genl Scott & genl Santa Anna, in which the latter was entirely routed, with the loss of the whole of his artillery, baggage &c, his army being entirely dispersed, which I sincerely hope will have the effect of bringing about an early peace.
"I had not supposed the time of service of the Volunteers . . . would have expired at so early a day . . . . I now can only hope to get forward a sufficient force in time from the Rio Grande, to sustain ourselves at Salittio . . . .
"Soon after the Battle of Buena Vista I felt myself bound to reply to a letter I had rec'd from Genl E.G.W. Butler, . . . & in doing so, . . . I gave him, as he was an old soldier, a description of it in a hurried way, not supposing for a moment he would have permitted any portion of the same to have found its way into any newspaper, particularly after I had been so severely censured in consequence of the private letter I wrote to genl Gaines . . . . I had taken the proper steps to have this matter put right, & one other . . . which also made it[s] appearance in the picyune; which was 'that in a conversation with Col Randolph of the Virginia Volunteers, I stated that [. . .] if my com'd had been composed entirely of regulars, I would not have succeed[ed] at Buena Vista [. . .]' which statement is entirely erroneous. . . ."
