TED CRONER Taxi, New York Night. Silver print, 1947-48; printed later. 15.75 x 15.25in, with the photographer's signature, in pencil,on verso. E1,200/1,800 After the war, Croner traded in his dreams of becoming a cinematographer for a successful career in fashion photography. Noticing something extraordinary lurking in otherwise standard fashion shots, Croner's mentor, Fernand Fonssagrives, suggested he take a class at the New School conducted by the influential designer Alexey Brodovitch. Croner's skill at capturing the essence of late night New York soon caught the attention of EdwardSteichen who included his work in two important exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art. This image is reproduced in THE NEW YORK SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS 1936-1963 (New York, 1992).
