(TEXAS.) Archive of Kelly and Day family papers.

(TEXAS.) Archive of Kelly and Day family papers. 64 items, various sizes and conditions. Dayton, TX and elsewhere, 1850-1904

  • Notes: An interesting archive from the early days of Texan statehood. John Kelly was one of the original 300 Austin colonists in 1824. He died in 1856, leaving widow Mary (Thomas) Kelly and two children. She then married her cousin Julius N. Day (1825-1896). This archive consists of 17 John Kelly financial documents from 1851-56; 40 financial documents of Julius and Mary Day, 1856-64; 6 documents of son John D. "Jack" Kelly, 1888-1909; and a 2-sheet family register of Mary's brother Leroy Thomas's family with dates from 1823 to 1880. During most of this period, the family was in Dayton, Polk County (now in Liberty County).
Several of the documents refer to the family's slaves, including an 1854 doctor's bill for a visit to "Jack Negro"; an 1857 tax receipt for "land Negroes & c"; and an 1862 receipt for a "negro whip." Also of interest is a doctor's certificate issued to Jack Kelly in Point Blank, TX in 1888, describing in detail his disability from a gunshot wound.
