(TEXAS.) Charon, engraver; after Aubry. Le Champ d'Asile: Le Laurier sous Leurs Pas y Croitra sans Culture. Aquatint engraving, 15 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches; minor wear, foxing, spot-mounted at two corners to early heavy board. Paris: Jean fils, [1819]

  • Notes: Champ d''Asile was a small colony of French refugee followers of the deposed Napoleon Bonaparte. It was founded under the auspices of the United States on the Trinity River in what was then still Spanish territory. It lasted for only six months in 1818 before being dispersed by the Spanish, but its short life inspired a French patriotic attachment to Texas for years to come. This print depicts soldiers establishing an agricultural colony; one is embraced by an officer (General Lallemand?). The central image is surrounded by banners representing Napoleonic battles from Moscow to Waterloo. The caption translated reads "The laurel under their path will grow without culture." One in OCLC, at the French national library (deposited in 1819); none traced at auction.
