Folio, later morocco with most of original gilt pictorial covers and backstrip laid down, joints starting; closed tears on a few pages, lacking parts of 3 leaves and some tissue guards, minor wear and finger soiling throughout; two inscriptions by early owners.   • Notes: "Very rare. One of the 'big four' cattle books. An important book on the history of the cattle industry, and no collector's library would be complete without it. It is rarely found with the frontispiece"--Adams, Rampaging Herd, 593. "One of the rarest Texas books"--Jenkins, Basic Texas Books, 34. Graff 891; Howes 820 ("b"). This copy spanned four generations of an early Texas ranching family; the original owner Henry L. Oberthier (1829-1904) of Comanche, TX is profiled on pages 451-2. Provenance: H.L. Oberthier inscription on verso of final page, 1897; gift inscription from son Fred Harrison Oberthier (1869-1968) of Hereford, TX to his grandson on flyleaf, 1956. with--5 leaves of related family notes.
