"COL. CROCKETT NOT DEAD YET" (TEXAS.) Issue of the Manufacturers and Farmers Journal on the survival of Davy Crockett at the Alamo. 4 pages, 21 1/2 x 15 inches, on one folding sheet; minor faint dampstaining. Providence, RI, 5 May 1836

  • Notes: This newspaper repeats a bit of "fake news" from the Cincinnati Whig, almost two months after the fall of the Alamo: "Col. Crockett, the hero and patriot, it is said is not yet dead. This cheering news is brought by a gentleman now in this city, directly from Texas, and who left the colonel, as he states, three weeks ago . . . where the colonel was lying quite ill, but gradually though slowly recovering from his wounds. . . . He states that Crockett was left upon the battleground at St. Antonio, covered with wounds, and as the Mexicans supposed, dead." To the Whig''s credit, they expressed some skepticism about the report: "It is either true, or the man who detailed to numerous persons in this city the above statements, is a lying villain."
