(TEXAS.) Músquiz, Ramón. Letter commanding the town of Goliad to contribute to the defense against hostile Indians.

(TEXAS.) Músquiz, Ramón. Letter commanding the town of Goliad to contribute to the defense against hostile Indians. Letter Signed as political chief of the Department of Texas, addressed to the town council of Goliad, TX. 4 pages, about 12 x 8 inches; minimal wear. Bejar [San Antonio], TX, 2 February 1833

  • Notes: Músquiz quotes a long letter from Congress, ordering Texans to take measures in their ongoing frontier battles with the Comanches, so "those tribes of savages do not impose on Mexicans an ominous yoke" ("que esas tribus de salvajes no impongan a los mejicanos un yugo ominoso"). Funds were to be appropriated from the army and navy budget. Músquiz then commands Goliad to appoint a tax collector to contribute toward this effort. Músquiz, though loyal to Mexico, was known for his sympathetic dealings with the Anglo-American settlers of Texas. He later helped identify bodies of the defenders at the Alamo.
