  • Notes: Champ d'Asile was a colony of refugees from Napoleon Bonaparte's army, established on the Trinity River in 1818, near the present town of Liberty, TX. Landing in territory disputed between the United States and Spain, the French drew the suspicion of both nations, and they retreated after a Spanish military threat six months after their arrival. This volume contains three scarce works on this ephemeral colony.
