First edition in book form, first issue, octavo; with the heading on page 1 in rustic type, "Mr. Pitt' on page 453, and the woodcut of Steyne on page 336 (later suppressed); illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, additional vignette title, 38 engraved plates, and more than 100 in-text woodcuts after designs by the author; bound in full russet morocco by Bayntun with a miniature portrait of Thackeray inset on the front board surrounded by a gilt and green-stamped circlet of interlaced leaves, ruled and decorated with gilt, spine gilt-lettered, gilt-decorated morocco turn-ins, green moire silk endleaves, all edges gilt (one or two plates with faint foxing; lacking ad leaves, occasional, minor spots concentrated at margins; Emily Gertrude Lynch's ex-libris bookplate to front silk); 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 in.
