THE BIG STICK ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as Vice President, to Lyman Abbott, admiring his article in The Outlook on foreign relations

THE BIG STICK ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as Vice President, to Lyman Abbott, admiring his article in The Outlook on foreign relations and admitting that he is planning to borrow ideas from it for a September speech in Minnesota. 1/2 page, single 4to sheet, Vice President's Chamber stationery; folds. Oyster Bay, 29 June 1901

  • Notes: "I like so much what you have been saying on our foreign relations that I am going to crib shamelessly, especially from your last article, when I make my Minnesota speech next September. I was very sorry not to get Lawrence down here to meet some other college men in a talk on what I might have call applied decency in public life."
On 2 September 1901, a speech given at the Minnesota State Fair, Roosevelt coined the phrase that would become part of his legacy: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
