-
Notes: Reports on the campaign to capture the leader of a group of Africans in the remote area of Guachinanga, several of which are Signed by Conde de Villanueva, the head of the army in Cuba. The Africans, never referred to as "slaves," were led by "Felipe, ganga," a native African.
Felipe and his followers had barricaded themselves in a "palenque," one of the rebel towns in the interior, which the Cuban historian Pedro Deschamps Chapeaux describes as "the culmination of insurrection, representing not only a challenge to the reigning society, but a recreation of their own way of life."
The insurrection ended in February 1833 with the capture of Felipe, some of his followers, and an arsenal. He was tried with 7 others. Their fate is not specified.
