THE FIRST BOOK TO CONTAIN ILLUSTRATIONS BY DENSLOW [DENSLOW, W. W.] History of Northampton County, Pennsylvania; with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery... from original sketches by artists of the highest ability. 27 lithograph plates (including 4 double-page) of which 3 are by Denslow, 3 steel-engraved portrait plates and colored map. Small folio, publisher's leather-backed pebbled cloth with front cover ruled and titled in gilt, spine title gilt, corners worn, spine rubbed at ends and front joint; hinges strengthened, crude repair to torn contents page, edge tears to index leaf, previous owner's stamp on verso of one plate, minor intermittent spotting. Philadelphia, 1877

  • Notes: The first book to contain illustrations by Denslow and hitherto unrecorded. Greene and Hearne record one of the lithographs by Denslow, the splendid view of Easton on the Delaware, but mistakenly give as its source a later history. This view was also believed to be issued as a separate print. Of the 3 lithographed plates with the signature "W W Denslow" or simply the artist's initials, two are double-page.
