THE GREAT ART JOURNAL DERRIÈRE LE MIROIR. Nearly complete run of the publication in 252 (of 253) numbers. Plus approximately 20 duplicates. Hundreds of lithographed plates and reproductions by Bonnard, Matisse, Chagall, Miró, Picasso, Kandinsky, Calder, Braque, and others. 4to, most in original pictorial wrappers, some bound together in single cloth volumes (mostly Miró and Giacometti volumes such as 3 9/40, 65, 98, 123, 128, 13 9/40, 16 4/65, and 186). Condition generally quite good. does not contain the rare 66-67-68 chagall number. Paris: Maeght, 1946-82
- Notes: nearly full run of maeght's legendary periodical featuring the great artists and writers of the 20th century. The Galerie Maeght opened in Paris in 1945 and, by the next year, created Derrière le Miroir as an elaborate publication to coincide with their exhibitions. By including original lithographs produced by master printer Fernand Mourlot, they promoted artists such as Bonnard, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Steinberg, Chagall, Bram Van Velde, Miró, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Ubac, Bazaine, Calder, Derain, Chillida, Tapiés, among others. Poets and writers including Aragon, Beckett, Char, Eluard, Prévert, Queneau, Reverdy, and Sartre contributed previously unpublished texts, thereby creating one of the most impressive cultural periodicals of the century. Although it does not contain the rare Chagall number 66-67-68, it is difficult to find such a full run. Arntzen Q148.
