The Great Sanitary Fair. Civil War Banner.

Cloth banner, 5x3 1/2 feet, made of painted silk, cotton, metallic braid, and rough denim or sail cloth; attached to a long rod which may be contemporary with the piece. Np, [1864]

  • Notes: This banner belonged to Erasmus Jones, a Welsh-born clergyman who served as chaplain to the 21st Vogdes Division of the United States Colored Troops. At the end of the Civil War, Jones returned to Great Britain, taking with him an extensive collection of artifacts relating to the Colored Troops.
The Vogdes Division occupied Jacksonville from February-April 1864, suggesting the dating of this piece. Further, there appears to be a partially extant date (64) above the central needlepoint image. The inconsistencies of the various vignettes suggest the work of several hands, most likely women associated with the Sanitary Fair. It is unclear for which fair this banner was produced, as several fairs were held in 1864 to raise money for the Union cause.
This piece has been exhibited twice in England; once in 1925 and again in 1956 at the Livingston exhibit at the Barnett Museum. Undoubtedly, a complex and extraordinary item.
