Though reading and writing were forbidden among slaves, Islam was widely practiced among the slave population, most of whom came from Senagal and the Yoruba country. Allan D. Austin in his " African Muslims in Ante-Bellum America' New York, Routledge, 1997 points out the prevalence of Islam on the plantation during the period preceding the Civil War. In one community alone, an Imam by the name of Bilali was plantation manager for the entire 1000 person Muslim slave group on Sapelo island, Georgia.
