  • Notes: nearly all volumes of the most famous art periodical of the 20th century. Begun by Greek expatriate Efstatios Eleftheriades (known as Tériade, the name he adopted once he settled in France) in partnership with David Smart, then publisher of "Coronet" and "Esquire" in the United States. Smart wished to create "the most beautiful magazine on earth." To that end, he provided the financial backing, allowing Tériade freedom as art director. Tériade's manifesto appearing in Volume 1 explains the aim of the magazine: "Verve is devoted to artistic creation in all fields and all forms. Verve will utilize the technical methods best suited to each reproduction. It will call upon the best specialists in heliogravure in colours and in black and white, as well as typography, and will not disdain the forgotten process of lithography."
Although it drew upon all of art history, Verve focused on contemporary artists, often requesting such masters as Marc Chagall, Andre Masson, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Pierre Bonnard, Wassily Kandinsky, and Ferdinand Leger to create original prints specially produced for the magazine. Not to be outdone in the literary arena, Teriade also attracted such writers as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Federico Garcia Lorca, Paul Valery, Andre Gide, John Dos Passos, and other major figures to contribute to the issues. Arntzen Q339. See lot 43 for Volume 37/38.
