THE PORT-ROYAL LOGIC

ARNAULD, ANTOINE; and NICOLE, PIERRE. La Logique; ou, L'Art de Penser. 473, [7] pages, including errata/license leaf at end. 12mo, contemporary calf gilt, front joint restored; contemporary signature in lower margin of title. Paris: Charles Savreux, 1662

  • Notes: first edition. The manual of logic co-authored by Arnauld and Nicole, "... developed from Descartes's Regulae, elaborates the theory of 'clear and distinct' ideas and gives the first account of Pascal's Méthode. It had enormous influence as a textbook until comparatively recent times" (DSB). It became known as the Port-Royal Logic because of the authors' association with the Jansenist Convent of Port-Royal. DSB I, 292.
