[THE SEASONS.] 1897. Each approximately 12.375 x5.5in. [Champenois, Paris.] Condition varies, generally A. Trimmed to image. Mucha created his original series of the Seasons in 1896. The decorative panels were so well received and so successful that he recreated themin 1897 and then again in 1900. Aside from four brand new "lovely nymphs in arresting poses", this series differed from the first seriesin size. As if the public complained that the original panels were too large, the 1897 set was created in a much smaller scale. Originally 17in high and printed with "a top adorned with flowers appropriate to the season, and the designation of each season . . . placed in an ornamental design underneath" (Rennert/Weill p. 151), these have all been trimmed to the gold border surrounding the central figures. Rennert/Weill 37.
