THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA. 1919
Angelic and patriotic, a nurse is wrapped in the American flag calling on people to join the Red Cross. During the war the Red Cross labored to not only raise money (which in the course of two separate pledge drives raised more than 297 million dollars) but also to enroll members. By the end of the war Red Cross membership "had grown to thirty million, almost one-third of the entire population" (Rawls p. 128). Theofiles 242, Borkan p. 149.
