The Women's Liberation Movement. Poster of Political Protest.

The Women's Liberation Movement.
Poster of Political Protest.

Medina, OH: Pro Arts Inc., 1970.

Large format screenprint in Day-Glo orange and blue background, featuring a forceful symbol of female empowerment, the clenched fist within the circle & cross icon; 847 x 537 mm; 33¼ x 21 1/8 in.

The simplicity of the design and bold color choice carry this poster's statement so clearly and well, it has a timeless nature. The Women's Liberation Movement began in the 1960s. Adherents made themselves heard in many protests carrying posters just like this.

The Kent State massacre took place shortly before this poster was designed. Pro-Arts Inc. was founded in 1967 by Mike and Ted Trikilis, two Kent State dropouts. They specialized in the mid-century popular Day-Glo posters sold in head shops covering topics from female liberation, to Black power, free love, anti-Vietnam protest, astrology, and even a memorable poster of Farrah Fawcett in 1977.
