"A Streetcar Named Desire." First color study for the award-winning 1947 production of Tennessee Williams's play. Watercolor, graphite, and gouache on paper,with hand-painted borders. 107x176 mm; 4 1/4x7 inches. Matted and framed by Mielziner for his friend, art historian Wendy Stedman Sheard, Signed "J. Mielziner - 1947" on the matte and additionally Inscribed and Signed above signature, dated 29 July 1956. Mielziner's faded description in pencil on frame board, translated by Sheard on loose sheet of paper.

  • Notes: A Streetcar Named Desire won Tennessee Williams the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948 and its stage adaptation was among the most popular and critically successful plays of the century. Starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy in a 3-city tour that ended at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway, it claimed the New York Drama Critics'' Circle Best Play and won Tandy the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Blanche duBois. Mielziner Inscribed the matte "For Wendy O. Williams [Sheard''s maiden name, not the punk icon] From Her Friend Jo Mielziner." Sheard transcribed the faded pencil note he wrote on the back: "This is the first color study for Streetcar Named Desire / Jo Mielziner."
