  • Notes: Junius B. Booth (1796-1852) made his reputation as a great tragedian on the London stage in 1817. This playbill, from the Theatre Royal at Covent Garden, was issued in his first rush of fame. Describing his debut in Cymbeline: "Mr. Booth in the part of Posthumus, made an impression never exceeded by any Actor's first appearance in one of Shakspeare's Plays." The playbill promises that "Mr. Booth will appear . . . on Monday in King Richard the Third"--the role that made his reputation. Booth removed to the United States in 1821, where he continued his distinguished career and sired a family of actors--and one assassin. with--another playbill featuring Junius B. Booth Jr. at the National Theatre. 16 x 8 inches, minor dampstaining. Boston, 26 February [1850].
